They say it’s the most important meal of the day- and with good cause! Studies show that eating breakfast every day has many perks: it boosts your energy levels, improves mood, increases concentration levels, stabilises blood sugar, reduces hunger and boosts metabolism. Long term, those who regularly eat breakfast have reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. What’s not to love!
Here are our some of our favourite healthy breakfasts to kick start your day in the best way!
- Porridge
Tasty, filling, and full of slow-release carbs, oats are a great breakfast choice. Traditionally they’re cooked with water or milk. You can add fresh or frozen fruit, cocoa powder, honey, sugar, banana, cinnamon, protein powder or whatever sweetens it to your taste. If you’re stuck for time in the morning, overnight oats are a popular alternative that can be prepared the night before. Take porridge oats and milk or Greek yogurt, then any of the delicious additions you enjoy!
- Greek yogurt and fruit
If you fancy something lighter in the morning, greek yogurt and fruit is a healthy, fresh breakfast that makes you feel fantastic. You’ll get a protein fix from the yogurt and nutritional boost from the fruit. Build up your yogurt bowl with some granola or nuts and seeds if you like a bit of texture and crunch too. Yum!
- Cereals
Cereal is one of the most popular breakfast choices. Quick and simple to make, it’s clear why! We recommend wholegrain cereals such as bran flakes, shreddies, or Weetabix- these are full of fibre and slow releasing energy. And they certainly don’t have to be boring- we love to top with bananas, nuts and seeds for a lovely and easy breakfast choice.
- Cereal bars
If you’re usually dashing out in the morning, why not stock up on some healthy cereal bars to grab on your way out? Or make your own- there’s loads of easy-to-follow online recipes. Grab a banana or an apple on the side for an extra bit of fibre and a vitamin boost!
- Toast
Toast is a staple breakfast for many people… Whilst white bread topped with lashings of butter or chocolate spread can be delicious, opt for wholegrain bread with a margarine spread, banana and honey, or a healthy nut butter for a more nutritious choice.
